What is Padel Americano?

Padel Americano is the most popular social padel format. Players sign up on their own and change partners every round, following a rotation that is fixed before the first serve. Over a full rotation everyone partners everyone else exactly once. Pairings never depend on results, so it suits mixed-level groups and club nights where playing with everybody matters more than the final ranking.

Why 9 players works well

Nine players turn up more often than organizers would like: eight confirmed, and someone brought a friend. Americano absorbs the extra player without sending anyone home. There are 9 rounds on 2 courts, one player rests in each round, and everybody rests exactly once. Each player plays 8 matches with 8 different partners — the whole group. Since everyone plays the same number of matches, the leaderboard stays fair. At 15 minutes a round, plan about 2 hours 15 minutes. If that is too long for the booking, end the tournament after any round: LiveCup closes it and the standings at that point are final. For a short evening, switching to 16-point matches saves more time than cutting rounds.

Scoring in Padel Americano

In padel Americano and Mexicano every match is played to a fixed total of points — 16, 24 or 32 in LiveCup — with rally scoring, so every rally counts. A 32-point match might end 18–14: each player on the first pair adds 18 to their personal total, each player on the second pair adds 14. One match takes about 10–15 minutes. The leaderboard is individual: the most points wins, and ties are split by point difference, then wins, then head-to-head points.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Americano and Mexicano padel?

Americano follows a rotation fixed in advance — everyone partners everyone, whatever the results. Mexicano draws only round 1 at random and pairs every later round from the live standings, so strong players meet strong players. Americano is the social one; Mexicano is the competitive one.

How many courts do I need?

One court per four players keeps everyone playing every round: 2 courts for 8 players, 4 courts for 16. With fewer courts the rounds simply take longer, so plan extra time. In LiveCup, named courts with automatic match assignment are part of the PRO plan; on a single-event pass you get the match list for each round and call the courts yourself.

Can players of different levels play together?

Yes, and Americano is the format built for it. Because partners rotate, a strong player carries a different partner every round and nobody is stuck in a weak pair. Choose Mexicano when levels are closer and the group wants tight matches.

How does the scoring work?

Each match is played to a fixed total of 16, 24 or 32 points with rally scoring. Both pairs keep what they score: an 18–14 result gives 18 points to each player on one side and 14 to each player on the other. The final standings are the sum over all rounds, so every point matters even in a one-sided match.

How long does a tournament take?

Count about 15 minutes per round. Eight players need 7 rounds on 2 courts — roughly 1 hour 45 minutes. A full Americano rotation for 16 players is 15 rounds, close to 4 hours, which is why bigger groups often stop after 7 or 8 rounds or switch to Mexicano. In LiveCup you can end the tournament after any round and the standings at that moment are final.

What does it cost to run it in LiveCup?

A tournament with up to 4 players is free. Bigger events need a single-event pass — $3 for one tournament with up to 32 players, no subscription — or the PRO plan at $9 per month if you organize every week.

Is 9 players a problem for Americano?

No. One player rests per round and the rest rotates so that everyone rests once. Two matches run in parallel on two courts in every round.

Can I shorten a 9-player Americano?

Yes — play to 16 points instead of 32, or end the tournament early. If you stop before round 9, some players will have rested and some not, so shorter matches are the fairer way to save time.
