Long Jump

A measured distance event that works as a station or a standalone athletics slot.

Mark a 15-18 metre runway leading to a sand pit or landing mat with a takeoff line at the front edge. Each child gets three run-up jumps, taking off before the line and landing as far into the pit as they can. Measure to the nearest mark in the sand and record each child's best of the three.

What you need

A sand pit or a marked landing mat, a measuring tape, a takeoff board or a painted takeoff line, and a rake to level the sand between jumps.

Space needed

A 15-18 metre runway leading into a landing area about 3 by 2 metres.

How long it takes

About 15 minutes for one class with three jumps per child. Running two pits in parallel keeps this to 15 minutes even for a larger class.

How to score it

Distance. Measure from the takeoff line to the nearest mark left in the sand for each jump; a child's score is their best of three, and the class is ranked by that best distance.

Ages

Suits ages 7 and up with a full running approach. For younger children, use a standing jump from a marked line instead of a run-up.

Safety

Rake the sand flat and check it for stones between every jump. No child starts their run-up until the pit is clear, and mark a queuing line well back from the runway.

Two variations

Variation 1

Standing long jump: jump from a stationary start with no run-up, which fits a shorter space or younger children.

Variation 2

Triple jump: a hop, a step and a jump in sequence before landing, for older or more confident classes.
