How many matches are in a single elimination tournament?
A single elimination tournament always has exactly n-1 matches, where n is the number of teams. For example, 8 teams = 7 matches, 16 teams = 15 matches, 32 teams = 31 matches. This is because each match eliminates exactly one team, and all teams except the winner must be eliminated.
How many matches are in a double elimination tournament?
A double elimination tournament has between 2(n-1) and 2(n-1)+1 matches. For 8 teams that is 14-15 matches, for 16 teams it is 30-31 matches. The extra match happens when the team from the losers bracket wins the first grand final, forcing a second deciding match.
How long does a tournament take?
Tournament duration depends on the format, number of teams, match duration, and how many matches run simultaneously. Use our calculator above to get an accurate estimate. As a rule of thumb: a 16-team single elimination with 15-minute matches takes about 1 hour with one court, or 30 minutes with two courts.
What is the best tournament format for 8 teams?
For 8 teams, we recommend groups + playoff (2 groups of 4, top 2 advance to semifinals). This gives everyone at least 3 matches while keeping the total to about 14 games. If time is limited, single elimination with 7 matches is the fastest option.
How many rounds are in a single elimination bracket?
The number of rounds equals the ceiling of log base 2 of the number of teams. For 8 teams = 3 rounds, 16 teams = 4 rounds, 32 teams = 5 rounds. If the number of teams is not a power of 2, some teams get byes in the first round.
What is the difference between single and double elimination?
In single elimination, one loss means you are out. In double elimination, you must lose twice. After your first loss, you drop to the losers bracket where you can still fight your way to the finals. Double elimination takes roughly twice as many matches but produces more reliable results since a single upset cannot eliminate a strong team.
How many teams can play in a round robin tournament?
Technically there is no limit, but round robin becomes impractical above 12-16 teams because the number of matches grows quadratically. With 16 teams you need 120 matches. For larger groups, consider groups + playoff format which uses round robin in small groups followed by elimination rounds.
Should I use groups + playoff or single elimination for a large tournament?
For 16+ teams, groups + playoff is usually better because it guarantees every team plays multiple matches (nobody travels to play just one game). Single elimination is faster but can feel unfair if strong teams are eliminated early. Groups + playoff combines the fairness of league play with the excitement of knockout rounds.
